Concrete Block Estimating Guidelines

Tidewater Block provides rule of thumb estimating guidelines when planning your project needs for concrete block and other masonry materials.

Block

  • 1.13 blocks per square foot of wall area
  • 75% of length of wall gives number of block per course
  • Wall height in feet times 1.5 equals number of courses

Brick

  • 7 Standard modular bricks per square foot of wall area
  • 5.5 Engineer (oversized brick) per square foot of wall area

Grout

  • 1 Cubic Yard of Fine Grout: 1-part cement to 3.3-parts sand
  • 2500 pounds of mortar sand
  • 8 bags of Portland cement (94 lbs./bag)

Sand

  • 1 Ton of mortar sand per 250 block
  • 1 Ton of mortar sand per 1000 brick

 Mortar

  • 1-part mortar (1-70 lb. bag) to 2 ½ parts sand (16 shovels or 320 lbs. of sand)
  • 3 bags of mortar per 100 block
  • 7 bags of mortar per 1000 brick

Wall Ties

  • 1 per every 10 brick (50 per cube)

Vermiculite

  • One 4 cubic foot bag fills 16 – 8” block or 9 – 12” block

Filling Hollow Block with Grout

  • 12” block 1.44 cubic yards per 100 block
  • 10” block 1.22 cubic yards per 100 block
  • 8” block 0.93 cubic yards per 100 block
  • 6” block 0.63 cubic yards per 100 block

Anchor Bolts

  • 1 every 4 feet
